Mounted Response Cadet Program
The Mounted Response Cadet Program offers developing and experienced horsemen and women the opportunity to gain valuable practical skills in horsemanship, emergency preparedness and community service. Unlike any other riding program, the cadet program is designed for teens and adults who would like to develop the skills of a mounted Ranger without having to serve as a Ranger.
Cadets and their horses train both independently and alongside the Rangers of the U.S. Mounted Response Training Center. As a cadet, you learn:
- Basic through advanced horsemanship
- Fundamentals of horse training
- Backcountry survival
- Wilderness first aid
- Confidence and leadership
- An expanded list of lifelong skills
Cadets and their horses train once a month at Surprise Valley Ranch in Sapello, NM. Cadets from outside the region can attend extended special weeklong training sessions. Training programs are held in the classroom, in the barn and under field conditions. Cadets are encouraged to bring their horses for selected training sessions. Mounted training sessions for Rangers and cadets go from April through October.
During Mounted Response Unit Training Center field operations, cadets have the opportunity to assist the Rangers and their mounts. Cadets may be invited to travel with the MRUTC to care for horses and experience the details of field operations. You will enjoy the camaraderie of serving your community and state with teams from many agencies in law enforcement and emergency services. Most of all, at the end of the day you will feel the pride that comes with being part of an elite team of Rangers, cadets and their mounts.
