Hiking

The hills of the high country around Surprise Valley Ranch - best suited to experienced hikers prepared for rugged terrain!Nestled in the high country canyon lands on the eastern slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico, the gates at Surprise Valley Guest Ranch open to over two million acres of breathtaking wilderness.

Step onto our private trail as it winds its way up to Lone Pine Mesa. As if standing on the wing of a plane at 9744 feet, you may see hawks soaring above the grasslands of the high plains nearly three thousand feet below.

For an easy amble, follow the path from your cabin up to the High Meadow where you will likely find horses or cattle grazing in the summer, along with all the resident wildlife. Or, if you're a serious hiker and want to do some hard-core trailblazing, there's no shortage of wilderness in which to test your mettle! (But be sure your map, compass and survival skills are up to par with your hiking enthusiasm. If they're not, you might want to spend some time in our land navigation class or our all terrain surivival class first!)

Please be aware that for the most part, the high country is woven with trails best suited to the experienced hiker. Children and novices will be safest exploring the immediate area around the ranch or sticking to the High Meadow.

Bring your day pack and lace your boots for rugged terrain!
